Pete's Tako House

Pete’s Tako House

Pete’s Tako House, downtown at 502 Brooklyn Avenue between Broadway and St. Mary’s, serves breakfast tacos–or takos–all day long. The K comes from their old location, originally Tink-a-Tako.

Owners Dora “Kookie” and Raymond Rivera (pictured with the coffee mug) recently moved from their old location on Main Avenue to a spot that’s a stone’s throw from the lock and dam on the San Antonio River Walk’s Museum Reach. Their new spacious location, which offers free WiFi, is the perfect halfway point for tako fortifikation between downtown and The Pearl.

Pete’s Tako House menu is extensive, including everything from quesadillas to enchilada plates to fajitas to gorditas. I’ve been three times this fall, including one lunchtime visit, but I’ve only ordered breakfast tacos, which range in price from $1.79 to $2.99. I haven’t been disappointed yet. Their migas made me extremely happy. Everything on Pete’s menu is made fresh, including their homemade flour and corn tortillas. My friend, Maggie, said Pete’s corn tortillas are the best she’s ever tasted. I’ve spent time in Guatemala, so I can’t say that they are the best, but I will say they are in the same league. Their coffee is also very good, and their attentive staff keeps it coming.

Daily Lunch Specials for $6.99 include a Mexican Plate (two cheese enchiladas and a crispy taco) on Mondays; Carne Guisada Plate or Fiesta Chicken (a la Mexicana) Plate on Tuesdays; Enchilada Plate or Calabacita con Pollo Plate on Wednesdays; Soft or Crispy Tako Plate on Thursdays; Pete’s Special Plate (one cheese enchilada, carne guisada and guacamole) or Conchitas Locas Bowl (small shell-shaped pasta, picadillo and whole beans) on Fridays; and Fideo Loco (fideo, picadillo and whole beans) every day. Pete’s also has Barbacoa Takos for $2.99 on Saturdays and Sundays only.

The new location contains a party room, which is perfect size for work and family gatherings, and an outdoor patio, which is perfect place for people watching while you sip a little something. Raymond also gave me a tour of Pete’s restrooms, claiming they were the cleanest in San Antonio. It’s a claim that will be difficult to disprove.

Pete’s Tako House is open Mondays through Wednesdays from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Thursdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m.; and Sundays from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. You may like them on Facebook to keep up with their specials, including Happy Hour from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Pete’s phone number is (210) 224-2911.

  1. We will be moving to the S.A. area by fall so I am bookmarking all your great recommendations for places to see and eat! We have family in S.A. and I’ve also passed on new destinations to them. Keep them coming.

    1. Janeen, You’ll love San Antonio! It’s a special place. Thanks for your kind words about my blog. I’ll be posting an alphabetized index of all my posts on Dec. 31, so stay tuned! (Did you subscribe? You’ll get an email each time I post something new.) Cheers, Denise

  2. I’ve always been curious about Pete’s Tako House. I’m a Taco Taco Cafe patron for most of my Tacos. How does Pete’s compare overall?

    1. Doug, Taco Taco is hard to beat, as you know. However, Pete’s is very good. Their corn tortillas are worth the trip. Also, you can have a pre- or post-eating stroll down the Museum Reach of the River Walk, so the new location is great. Thanks for reading/commenting! Cheers, Denise
