Thankfully, we don’t have to wait for a blue moon, which occurs approximately once every 2.7 years, to dig into a heaping plate of huevos rancheros, papas and frijoles. San Antonio’s Blue Moon Mexican Restaurant, located at 3228 S. Flores, serves these delicacies daily for the wallet-pleasing price of $2.99.

You read that right: $2.99. And I haven’t even mentioned the handmade maiz (corn) and/or harina (flour) tortillas that accompany this breakfast bonanza. Is your mouth watering yet?

Blue Moon also serves 28 breakfast tacos, including bean and cheese, papa chorizo, potato and egg, chorizo and egg, and bean and egg. The taco that caught my eye is named “Coaches” taco, and it includes beans, bacon, egg and cheese.

In addition to huevos rancheros breakfast plates, you may select from 21 other plates, including steak and egg, barbacoa, porkchop, machacado (dry shredded beef cooked with jalapeño, tomato, onion and egg) or entomatadas (soft chilaquiles in special salsa topped with white cheese) and more.

And let’s not forget about their pancakes, oatmeal and omelettes. In other words, you will not leave Blue Moon hungry. Coffee, which is replenished steadily by a friendly, attentive staff, will set you back $1.49.

While you’re enjoying breakfast, take a moment to ponder which version of “Blue Moon” is your favorite: Billie Holiday, The Mavericks, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Mel Torme, or The Marcels. (I have to vote for The Marcels, since their song was featured in one of my all-time favorite movies, “An American Werewolf in London” directed by John Landis.)

A $5-minimum purchase is required for credit card use, so I recommend you round off your visit to Blue Moon with a bag of La Mejor Empanadas de Cajeta. I picked up a bag for my husband, and he enjoyed every sugar- and cinnamon-dusted crumb.

Daily lunch specials include Chile Relleños or Beef Fajitas on Mondays; Caldo Xochitl or Carne Asada on Tuesdays; Fideo con Carne or Carne Guisada on Wednesdays; Beef Ribs, Pork Chop or Cheese Enchiladas on Thursdays; and Enchiladas Mexicana, Steak Ranchero or Carne a la Mexicana on Fridays. Served with rice, beans, two tortillas and tea or coffee, these specials cost from $5.99 to $7.49 and are only small slice of Blue Moon’s gigante (gigantic) lunch menu, which I haven’t tried but will.
