Bird Bakery, located at 5912 Broadway across from Cambridge Elementary, is called “the nest” by its employees. No wonder. If I could live there, I would. Aside from its super-cute atmosphere, their food is to die for.
Local author Teri Wilson did sort of move in. She wrote most of her novel “Unleashing Mr. Darcy” at Bird. Genius!
Owners Elizabeth Chambers, who was born in San Antonio, and her husband, Armie Hammer, opened Bird in March of 2012. Elizabeth’s grandmother was a caterer in San Antonio, and many of Bird’s recipes were handed down from her. Despite Elizabeth’s Hollywood credentials, she was busy bussing tables the day I was there. Not an ounce of diva in her. The place was hopping, and Elizabeth pitched in wherever help was needed.
An honor graduate of UT-Austin’s journalism program, Elizabeth exudes Southern charm. It doesn’t hurt that she’s drop-dead gorgeous. When I took the first bite of my tarragon chicken salad sandwich and gave Elizabeth a big thumbs up, she said, “I’m so happy you like it.” I could tell she was sincere. My friend had a tuna melt, and she was delighted with her choice, too.
However, the real reason to visit Bird Bakery is their cupcakes: carrot, red velvet, The Elvis, chocolate peanut butter, sea salt caramel, chocolate, lemon, fresh coconut, coconut candy bar, nostalgic yellow, decadent chocolate, black and white, blue vanilla, pink vanilla, chocolate strawberry and fresh strawberry. Mini-cupcakes and gluten-free cupcakes are also available. Oh! And you’ll want to give their cakes, pies, cookies, brownies, lemon squares and pecan bars some attention, too.
Yes, it will take a bit of effort for you to make it through all of these, but I have faith that you can do it! And don’t forget the folks at home. Would you like for them to kiss your feet when you walk in? Nothing says love like a box of yum from Bird.
Bird is open Mondays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Bird is closed on Sundays.
