San Antonio’s European Dumplings honors Ukraine

Sometimes when times are tough, comfort food is what you need to soothe your soul. European Dumplings Cafe at 2211 NW Military, billed as a Ukrainian culinary adventure, will cure what ails you.

I met with one of my BFFs at this brightly lit and cheerfully decorated establishment in northwest San Antonio. We started off by ordering kompot, a drink made from boiled blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples, oranges and peaches. Not only did the kompot taste great, but it looked great.

For our main courses, we ordered borsch, a soup made with chicken, cabbage, bell peppers, onions, potatoes and sour cream, and a side of chicken dumplings. Each hit the spot! We also ordered pirozhki, savory pancakes filled with mashed potatoes and sautéed onions. Yes, you read that right. Savory pancakes for the win!

Olga, the owner, grew up near Soledar, Ukraine. She and her husband, a Mexican national, started off with a food truck before opening their stand-alone restaurant. Their hearty dishes and warm hospitality keep folks coming back for more.

European Dumplings is opened on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. They are closed on Tuesdays. They also have a second location at 8065 Callaghan Road open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. every day except Tuesday.

Another San Antonio Ukrainian establishment to support is Laika Cheesecake and Espresso at one of their three locations. A friend, who’s an incredible cook, served their cheesecake at Thanksgiving because she said she couldn’t make it as good as they do. Their cheesecakes are unbelievably delicious.

Slava Ukraini!

  1. Oh, Denise,
This looks like a perfect addition to the San Antonio culinary options. I wish we had something like it here.
Just right for tummies and the times.
