M.K. Davis serves San Antonio’s hungry and thirsty

When contemplating the number of 32-ounce schooners of beer that M.K. Davis has served since the 1960s, the Gulf of Mexico comes to mind.

The night my husband and I went, schooners of beer were the hot item. To have an ice cold half gallon of beer delivered to your table for $6 (mas o menos), you can understand why.

Add three pieces of homemade fried chicken (two legs and a thigh), French fries, salad and Texas toast to your order for $7.99, and it’s clear why M.K. Davis has been a family favorite since it opened in 1956.

One of my Zumba instructors grew up in Victoria, Texas, and every time her father comes to visit, M.K. Davis is his restaurant of choice. One of my students says that M.K. Davis is his family’s go-to place for every life milestone. The chicken fried steak is his favorite.

While my husband and I waited on our order, we sipped on an ice-cold schooner and chatted with our nearby neighbors. I made note to order the onion rings on my next visit. They look scrumptious.

If comfort food, neon signs and beer is your thing, put M.K. Davis on your to-do list. It’s another of San Antonio’s long-time jewels.

M.K. Davis, located at 1302 N. Flores, is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.; and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is closed on Mondays.
