Sabor de Mexico is one of San Antonio’s hidden gems

Sabor de Mexico, a taqueria at 1367 Austin Highway at Rainbow, makes one of the best bean and cheese tacos in San Antonio.

As someone who ate her way through 16 bean and cheese tacos from San Antonio’s South Side, I believe my bean and cheese bonafides are legit. My students and I decided that it all boils down to the cheese (real, not processed) and the beans. Sabor de Mexico scores a goal on both.

I prefer to order my bean and cheese on corn, but Sabor de Mexico’s flour tortillas are the real deal, too. Two bean and cheese to go will set you back $3.03, tax included.

This mom and pop location also offers affordable breakfast specials, like two eggs, two pancakes and coffee for $3.99; huevos rancheros with coffee for $3.75; and three of the same breakfast tacos (no bacon) for $2.99. Is San Antonio great or what?

Sabor de Mexico, like any taqueria worth its weight, gives you a basket of chips with a side dish of salsa to tide you over until your food arrives.

The staff is friendly, and their non-taco fare includes tortas, barbacoa, carne asada and menudo (on Saturdays and Sundays). You can also pick up a little something sweet to polish off your meal at the cash register.

Sabor de Mexico rates high on Yelp. “Every time you walk in this restaurant you’ll feel like Norm in an episode of “Cheers.” The owners and staff greet everyone with such warmth,” wrote one reviewer.

San Antonio has more than its fair share of taquerias. It’s one of the things that makes the Alamo City great. Sabor de Mexico adds to that greatness.

The owners aim to bring the flavors (sabor) of Mexico to your table. They are open daily from 6:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. except for Sundays, when they are open from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
