San Antonio’s Green Door Thrift Shop gives back

Save green at the Green Door!

One of San Antonio’s best thrift shops is hidden in plain sight, tucked away at 1030 Nacogdoches Road behind the Walgreens on Broadway at Basse, one of the city’s busiest intersections.

Run by a dedicated volunteer crew of 40 and one part-time staff member, proceeds from the Green Door–a ministry of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church–provided more than $114,000 of support to local charities in 2021. Besides finding a treasure or two that you can’t live without, your purchases (and your donations) help those in need.

Holiday ready

For those looking for holiday decor to brighten up your abode, the Green Door has reasonably priced decorations, ornaments, stockings and tree stands. They also have festive clothing that will help you shine during the holiday season.

Treasure hunt to your heart’s delight

While I was in the store, I ran into a friend who was shopping for tweed. She’s going on a British-themed bicycle ride, so the Green Door came to her wardrobe’s rescue.

Over the years I’ve found jewelry, paintings, furniture and fine china that has made its way into our home or friends’ homes. I’ve also found clothes that brighten my closet. My most recent find was a tropical-themed jacket on sale for $2! I also found a set of delicate champagne flutes that I’m going to give to our neighbors with a bottle of bubbly. Two mugs from Germany that feature Bavarian lions–a symbol of courage, valor, strength, bravery and royalty–will make a perfect birthday gift for a friend.

Good prices get even better

The Green Door uses a system that lowers prices according to the day the item was placed in the shop. The longer an item has been in the shop, the lower its price will be. Take a close look at the item’s tag to see if you hit the jackpot.

Treat yourself to a visit to the Green Door! It’s open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
