San Antonio’s Orderup serves comfort food

Best burgers in the region

For old-time San Antonians who grew up eating at the Ize Box on Broadway at Grandview, Orderup comes the closest to replicating those mouth-watering burgers of yore.

And for those of you who’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you know that I have a weakness for French fries. Orderup’s French fries are the reason I walk 10,000 steps a day. Life without them would just be too dismal.

My husband, a vegetarian, enjoys Orderup’s veggie burger–a chipotle black bean burger on a wheat bun with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle–and our daughter and I are partial to their Superclub Chickenburger with avocado, bacon, tomato, mayo, grilled onion, cheddar and jack cheese. We actually buy one and split it because the serving is huge.

We do not split the French fries, however. We each get our own order of fries so there are no hard feelings.

On a recent visit, my mother ordered the ABC Burger with avocado, bacon, cheddar with lettuce, tomato and onion, and our neighbor ordered the Three Amigos Burger with chipotle mayo, grilled serranos, jalapeños, cheddar, jack and queso. No one went home hungry.

In addition to their awesome burgers and fries, Orderup also has tacos (fish, shrimp, fajita, veggie y más), pizzas (14 selections, including Hawaiian, margherita and BBQ chicken), nachos, shakes, soups, salads, margaritas, beer and wine for your enjoyment. Orderup opens at 7 a.m. with breakfast tacos, breakfast bagels and breakfast pizzas.

Cookie Monster approved

For dessert, our daughter is a big aficionado of Orderup’s homemade chocolate chip cookies. They also have gluten-free versions at the ready. Order their cookies individually or in sets of six. Or if you’d like to make them at home, order 12 frozen cookie dough balls para llevar (to go).

Located at 999 E. Basse Road, Suite 193, Orderup is next door to the Lincoln Heights H-E-B. Their hours are 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily. Outdoor seating is abundant, and you may also pick up food to go. Give Orderup a try!
