San Antonio’s Shades of Green gives gardeners inspiration

A friend of mine who is an avid gardener introduced me to Shades of Green more than 20 years ago. Whenever she’s feeling blue, it’s her go-to place.

“You just can’t be sad there,” she said.

I agree. Shades of Green will put anyone in a good mood. Meandering pathways, soothing fountains and blooming flowers are sure to lift your spirits.

It’s a gardener’s dream. Even if you aren’t a gardener, you’ll want to become one. It’s that inspiring.

The knowledgeable, friendly staff at Shades of Green will teach you about native plants and the benefits of organic gardening.

Bob Webster, one of the co-owners, has been host of KTSA’s Garden Show since 1991. The author of “Gardening in South Texas,” Bob’s knowledge is immense, and he’s willing to share it.

Shades of Green normally offers FREE Saturday Seminars at 9:45 a.m., but they’ve been placed on pause during the pandemic. Check their website to see when they’ll be back on.

Looking for a perfect gift? Shades of Green will have it. Local artist Lyn Belisle’s clay pockets are my personal favorites.

Shades of Green is located at 334 W. Sunset Road, in between Broadway and 281. Their hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

  1. Gosh. I used to shop at Shades of Green and I’ve been gone almost 23 years. Something reassuring about it still being a ‘go-to’ garden place.

  2. I’ve never been to Shades of Green, but my sisters just gave me a gift certificate from there for my birthday. Now I can’t wait to use it!

    1. Mary, You are going to LOVE Shade of Green. I just went this past weekend to pick up some portulaca (moss rose) for our backyard patio. It is a soothing, inspiring place. Enjoy! Thanks for reading/commenting. If you haven’t subscribed to my blog, please do! You may also follow me on Facebook at facebook.com/SanAntonioTourist. Cheers, Denise
